  Seller

Use your Marine Survey Condition and Report as an effective marketing tool.

An astute and experienced buyer will select their own Professional Marine Surveyor to investigate your boat and identify its strengths and weaknesses.  This can be an anxious experience for you.

What will be found and how will it affect the sale?   Many sellers become used to the idiosyncrasies of their boats and they are surprised by the findings of a Professional Marine Surveyor.

Remove the "anxiety" element from this discovery process, see the strengths and weakness of your boat as seen through a "Professional Marine Surveyors eyes" ... before you put it on the market or list it with a broker.

Deliverables:

  • Each of the systems aboard your boat will be examined.
  • The boat will be assigned a condition and estimated market value.
  • Use the reports findings and recommendations as a marketing tool.
  • Maximize sale minimize sales time using tips and techniques.
  • Get your best price by providing an environment of "trust" and "full disclosure".
  • Show the report to the prospective buyer. Demonstrate that you have either attended the findings and recommendations or simply explain what you won't be doing for your asking price.

  Buyer ...

Minimize Your Risk ... Be Prepared for your closing ...
Make sure that your ... "Agreed Upon Price and Purchase Agreement"
is contingent upon ... the "Findings and Recommendations" from a ...
"Professional" Marine Inspection with Sea Trial.

An inspection by a "Professional" Marine Surveyor will provide you with vital information that will help you determine what to negotiate for based upon

  • Findings and Recommendations,
  • An opinion of the approximate investment of time and money to address the Findings and Recommendations,
  • An opinion as to the Condition and Estimated Market Value of the vessel based on the Findings and Recommendations.
An astute and "experienced" boat buyer has learned that it is in their best interest to hire a "Professional" Marine Surveyor. Often this "experience" is gained through default ... after spending time and money correcting something that would have been found ... had they only budgeted for ... a Professional Marine Inspection with Sea Trial as part of their in their due diligence process in purchasing their boat.

Inspection of a Used Boat

It is common place for the findings and recommendations to be used by the buyer to negotiate the final purchase price of the vessel.

Inspection of a New Boat

It is common place for the findings and recommendations to be used by the buyer to develop a "punch list" of items that need to be fixed before the owner will take delivery of the boat.

 RISK Taker ...

A risk taker may be tempted to purchase a boat because it is such a "GOOD DEAL" and won't be on the market very long.  They rationalize that they will purchase now ... then simply insure and/or finance the boat at a later date.

Sometimes "risk takers" are surprised to learn after the sale ... that their chosen Finance or Insurance company wants a copy of a boat survey before they will assume the risk of either lending money or insuring the boat.

Please ... don't get caught in this predicament!

If you buy without engaging a Professional Marine Surveyor ...

  • You lose an opportunity to negotiate a final sales price based on          "Findings and Recommendations",
  • You may be told that you won't have insurance coverage or financing ... until a Report of Survey is submitted to your lender or underwriter,
  • You may find yourself uncompensated when your finance or insurance company "requires" that you respond to the findings and recommendations of a Marine Survey.

Owner

Consider having your boat inspected every two (2) years or the next time you plan to haul your boat for its annual inspection.

A Professional Marine Inspection can be used as an
"Effective means to preserve your boats value" and learn about new products and ideas for implementation.

Each of the systems aboard your boat will be examined, and evaluated for condition.  Use these Findings and Recommendations to effectively prioritize
what to renew or repair.

All boats need maintenance ... make sure that you plan maintenance items to be timely, cost effective, and maximize the rate of Return On your Investment.

Damage Claims

When a boat is damaged, the insurance carrier may retain a Marine Surveyor
to document and give an opinion as to the:

  • Nature and Extent of Damage
  • Probable Cause of Loss
  • Amount of money to be set aside for repairs
  • Value of the boat before and after the loss
  • Review the estimates and invoices submitted by the insured for repair/replacement of damaged items are FAIR and REASONABLE.
A good surveyor will remain objective ... while representing only the person(s) who retained them.

Please ... don't expect this surveyor to compromise their objectivity by asking them to:

  • represent you,
  • suggest your best course of action to discover and recover your losses.
If those are your expectations ... you should retain your own "Professional" Marine Surveyor ...

Select someone who

  • has experience in working damage claims,
  • will use their knowledge to assist you in investigating the damage,
  • will suggest your best course of action to recover your losses,
  • will review the work and repair estimates before you submitt them to ensure that they are FAIR and REASONABLE so that you are protected from comitting Insurance Fraud.
Why a Contract?

Clear Communications and reaffirming Expectations are key to providing outstanding service!

When you engage the services of J.N. Allinson Associates, Inc., you will receive a letter of introduction and an Authorization for Survey Report and Contractual Agreement.  These documents will describe the Survey Purpose, Survey Scope, Fee, Payment Schedule, Terms and Conditions.

Your acceptance of the contract will be required before the inspection begins.

How we determine the fee

If your sole criteria for hiring a Marine Surveyor is a cheap fee ...
we understand ... but will encourage you to please keep looking ...

we charge a "Professional Fee" for a "Professional Job".

Our fees are based on our service and the written product we deliver
Our reports are accepted by all banks and underwriters.

When you select J.N. Allinson Associates, Inc. ...
You will be pleased when you say that you .... "Got what you paid for"

Tips for selecting a surveyor  ....

  • Interview them and discuss your plans and needs,
  • Inquire about their process ... do they NDT test batteries, offer infrared thermal imaging, are they a published author in the field of Marine Surveying ?
  • Discuss their knowledge, and ability to gather and communicate information,
  • Compare a Surveyor's fees vs the value they will provide for you,
  • Review samples of their Reports (see bottom of this page)
If there is a fit ... then hire them ... if not move on.

A "Guideline" for Fees and Services
are listed in the table(s) below
.

Like other professionals, we bill out for our time.
Our fee is based on "COST PLUS" Basis.  Hourly fee is based on a "work effort" of Seventy Five ($75) Dollars US per hour door to door ...PLUS ... time for report writing, and the type of equipment used for the inspection (e.g. Infrared Thermography $150/hr).

Inspection arrangements are your responsibility. If they go smoothly then your cost will be less than if the boat is not ready for inspection and we have to wait  while repairs are made.  We do allow some time to "trouble shoot" why items are not working and while we are quite capable of discovery, your quoted survey fee is based on a finite amount of time allocated to discovery inspection.

Upon completion of the inspection, you will be given a written "punch list" of "preliminary findings" and a verbal debriefing which highlights the findings.

Payment will be collected before reports are released.

The tables below give an idea of the "expected work effort" based on the Length Overall (LOA) however ....

The final fee we quote in the contract ... may be different than the guidelines listed below based upon the Vessel's:

  • age,
  • use,
  • location,
  • condition,
  • complexity of systems,
  • the level of inspection you request,
  • construction material(s) ... wood/fiberglass/metal/composites

Why John ("JACK") Nils Allinson, II?

"Jack" is a full time "Professional" Marine Surveyor.

He has over thirty (30) years experience using the "Scientific Method" for "Researching, Observing, Analyzing and Writing". That experience is used to prepare in depth REPORTS listing "Findings and Recommendations".  These skills are essential and have enabled him to become an ACCREDITED member of SAMS, a Certified Infrared Thermographer, and an
ABYC Certified Marine Electrical Technician

Over the years "Jack" has built upon a strong foundation of investigative skills, technical tools and solid work ethics that should make him your logical choice when looking for a Marine Consultant !

Academia & Scientist

"Jack" received his undergraduate training at the University of Florida in Microbiology and attended postgraduate studies in Environmental Engineering Sciences.

He went on to work for the University of Florida's Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences where he worked in the "Applied Sciences", not just the theoretical stuff !

"Jack" has studied and investigated the impact of people on water quality,
water chemistry and aquatic organisms in cypress domes, lakes, rivers and estuaries. Chances are excellent that when you hire "Jack" to either prepare your Report of Survey, or for Consultation, you will get
the quality unbiased service you paid for,

and a sharing of knowledge that will make the experience enjoyable !

Work History

Following academia, "Jack" moved on to work for Fortune 500 Corporations and their subsidiaries such as the The Envirosphere Company (Aquatic Scientist), The Equitable (Information Decision Support Commercial Mortgages) and The Coca-Cola Company (Information Decision Support, Financial Systems).
It was there that "Jack" honed his writing and computer skills and learned/lived the solid work ethics that have made these corporations so successful in their respective fields.

In other words, Integrity, Proactive, Timely and Accurate Exchange of Information!

"Jack" & The Water

"Jack" grew up along the water and boating. His aquatic journeys and environmental professions have taken him to both salt and freshwater environments in the Chesapeake Bay, Bermuda, Florida, Georgia, the Bahamas and yes even Prudhoe Bay in the Arctic Circle! "Jack" holds a USCG license for OUPV Near Coastal, and obtained the American Sailing Association Certified Instructor rating for ASA courses up to Coastal Navigation and Cruising Catamarans.  In addition to Instructor courses, "Jack" has completed student courses in Celestial Navigation through Offshore Passage Making.  "Jack" uses these boating skills to deliver both power and sailboats along the eastern coast of the United States.  "Jack" and his wife "Dr. B." Denise McMillin have made several sailing trips to the Bahamas and in the Florida keys on OWL N SUN II, their 37 foot 1984 Prout Snowgoose sailing catamaran.

To date "Jack's" longest  offshore sailing passage has been as a crew member on a 39 day transatlantic crossing from Jacksonville,Florida to Brighton Beach Marina, England. Stops along the way were made in Bermuda, the Azores, and Spain.

Report of Survey and Process

A "systems approach" survey is the procedure used at J.N. Allinson Associates, Inc. and the Report of Marine Survey format was designed after graduating with honors in 1998 from the "Yacht and Small Craft Surveying" program
at Chapmans School of Seamanship in St. Lucie, Florida.

Digital Video recording during the boat inspection is a standard part of the survey procedure by J.N. Allinson Associates, Inc.
Photos from this process are incorporated in the Report of Survey.

J.N. Allinson Associates, Inc. has developed a standard report format ...
however ... each report is "hand crafted"

(not a boiler plate listing sheet from a canned computer program) and can be easily customized to meet your specifice reporting needs!

So contact "Jack", discuss your consulting needs and discover that
... this "Jack" ...

REALLY DOES KNOW JACK !
